DISTANCE - Author: Elle

He drove through the winding streets, up the hills to the place he knew she’d be, the one place she went to when she needed to clear her head, to scream and let out all her pent up anger and frustrations, that serene safe haven that only the two of them knew about. But this drive held more urgency for him, he knew things had been rough for her lately, but the last few days had been even harder than the ones before, emotions had gotten the better of her and everything had spilled out in a fit of tears and hurt, crushing her spirit as a breakdown mounted.

When you feel all alone
And the world has turned its back on you
Give me a moment please to tame your wild wild heart
I know you feel like the walls are closing in on you
It's hard to find relief and people can be so cold
When darkness is upon your door and you feel like you can't take anymore…

Standing at the edge of the cliff, darkness surrounded her, a few stars visible in the cloudy gray sky, the clouds a sign of the anger in her heart. She looked across the Irish landscape that had once given her so much comfort and clarity, but this time it didn’t matter anymore, nothing did, she’d been stabbed in the back one too many times, taken their crap for far too long, bit her tongue and put her head down, going about her work, never saying anything or asking why, she’d been dedicated and this was how they repaid her? By stabbing her in the back, kicking her while she was down and punching her in the stomach as she stood trying to catch her breath after the first attack.

She watched the harsh waves crash against the rocks, the waves seemingly in tune with her, feeling the anger seeping from her body. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath as the cool breeze brushed her face, offering a comforting hand, her hair blowing all around her. The tears began to fill her eyes as once again the words and that day played through her mind once more. “It’s not FAIRRRRRRRRRR!” she screamed at the top of her lungs, hoping the whole world would hear her as she stomped her feet like a two year old who hadn’t gotten their way.
“GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!” The wind carried her cries across the vast ocean to the other side of the sea, the screams getting quieter until they could no longer be heard. Opening her eyes, the tears ran down her cheeks. Lifting her arms from her side she held them above the land, imaging herself flying off that cliff and to a better place, to a new life away from everything that brought her down.

Approaching that special spot he slowed the car, looking for signs of her and her car. He didn’t usually worry when she made a trip up here, but today was different, the text message he had received had a different meaning behind it, an urgency and cry for help. The headlights scanned across the cherry red BMW parked along the side of the road; quickly he pulled his car behind hers. A loud beep filled the quiet car startling him. Reaching for his phone on the passenger’s seat he looked at the display. One new message, it read. Opening the message he read her words I need a friend. “I’m here.” He whispered. Opening the car door he stepped into the road, his feet quickly carrying him to her to the clearing overlooking the Irish Sea.

Let me be the one you call
If you jump I'll break your fall
Lift you up and fly away with you into the night
If you need to fall apart
I can mend a broken heart
If you need to crash then crash and burn
You're not alone

Approaching the clearing he saw her standing at the edge of the cliff. Her arms spread like wings, like Kate in Titanic at the front of the ship “flying” in the breeze.

“Why is it always me?” she asked looking towards the sky, as if the answer was written in the stars, as if someone up above would finally answer that niggling question.

“It’s not.” A voice spoke behind her, that all too familiar, comforting voice. “It just feels that way.” He spoke softly as not to startle her. “I got your message.” He said stepping closer to her, yet she still didn’t turn to face him. “Don’t do it.” He said calmly. “But if you go, I’m going with you.”

“What’s the point in staying… living?” she asked not tearing her gaze away from the ocean before her, the anger, frustration and hurt clear in her voice. He could see the pain etched on her face, the sparkle in her eyes was gone as well, replaced with anger and a distant look, she was slowly pulling away from everyone nearing breakdown mode.

“It’s not worth it .” he said standing next to her, his eyes glued to the beautiful girl before him. Her heart full of love and good had been bruised and mended countless times. A soul so pure it had been torn into pieces. “There’s too many people that love you and care about you, this isn’t the answer.”

“It’s not fair .” She whispered tears filling her eyes once more as a lump formed in her throat, talking about the situation upset her just as much as thinking about it.

“I know.” Was all he said, it’s all he could say, he couldn’t justify their reasoning for the decision they had made, because he was on her side… always.

When you feel all alone
And a loyal friend is hard to find
You're caught in a one way street
With the monsters in your head
When hopes and dreams are far away and
You feel like you can't face the day

, don’t let this be the end. There’s more to life, bigger and better things out there for you. Something good always comes from the bad.”

She knew he was right, she just needed to hear it from him, those words of comfort. He always knew what to say to make her feel better, he put that glimmer of hope back in her life, he was the ray of light to guide her back down the path to what was her life.

“But it hurts .” She whispered feeling the tears trickling down her cheeks once more.

“Of course it does.” He said taking another step towards her. “No one said it wouldn’t, but life goes on and you’ll come out stronger and better than before. There’s going to be bumps in the road babe, but you’ve got to overcome them.”

Turning to face him she stared at him questioningly. felt his heart break seeing her in this state, so unhappy and not her bubbly, happy go lucky self. He was furious though, that he would admit, it wasn’t right how they hand handled things. “You’ve got friends babe, lots of them who care no matter where they are in the world, they care, they’ll be there for you, you just have to let them know that you need them.” He paused to gage her reaction. “And most importantly, you’ve got me.” He said taking her hand in his. “You’ll always have me.”

'Cause there has always been heartache and pain
And when it's over you'll breathe again
You'll breathe again…

Wrapping his arms around her, he felt her collapse against him. He held her closer, in a warm protective hug as her tears continued to fall. She clung to him like her life depended on it…because it did. Slowly he inched them away from the edge of the cliff his hold on her never slipping, his hand ran along her back in a soothing motion. Slowly her tears subsided and all that was left was the two of them holding the other tightly. The sound of his heart beating filled her ears as she rested her head on his chest. The only other sounds around them heard being those of the waves that had calmed, crashing gently against the rocks below and their synchronized breathing.

“Feeling better?” he asked looking down at her, placing a gentle kiss on her head.

“Yeah.” Sniffed lifting her head from his chest, wiping the tears from her cheeks.

Looking up at him, their eyes locked in a gaze, one that they had shared one too many times, but never acted on. Taking a chance stepped closer to her, placing his hand beneath her chin he lifted it, forcing her to look up at him. With his heart beating a million miles a minute he leaned his face closer to hers, lightly brushing his lips against hers, a bolt of electricity running through his body as their lips connected in a tender kiss.

Surprised jumped at the sudden advancement from him, she never thought either one of them would act on their feelings for the other. Her heart fluttered in excitement as their lips continued to caress the others, closing her eyes tightly, she enjoyed the feelings running through her body. Her hands slipped around his waist, pulling herself closer to him, feeling his free hand slip around her back, holding her tight against him as the other hand slipped into her hair.

When their lips finally broke apart, they found the other staring back at them his sparkling eyes meeting her shimmering ones under the star dotted sky. The clouds having lifted above them, vanishing with the change in her mood, revealing a clear night sky.

“I love you .” He confessed pushing a strand of hair behind her ear, his eyes never leaving hers.

“I love you too.” She whispered a small smile forming on her lips.

smiled that gorgeous smile of his, putting the beat back in her heart, but this time it was different, he was her reason to go on, to face the world and trudge through the day. “You are not alone.” He smiled at her. “Never.” He said pulling her into a hug, feeling her snuggle against his chest.

“Thanks .” She whispered wrapping her arms around him.

“No worries babe.” He smiled rubbing his nose against hers. “Let’s go home.” He whispered leading her towards the car, their arms wrapped around the other’s waist.

When you feel all alone
And the world has turned its back on you
Give me a moment please
To tame your wild wild heart
